Mastiffs are an incredibly popular dog, both as family pets and as guard dogs. If you are considering getting a new mastiff, knowing some history of the breed will help you to choose the right one for you.

Having descended from the ancient dog breeds "Alaunt" and "Molosser," the English Mastiff breed is actually the oldest British breed of dog. For many centuries, this mastiff was used as a fighting dog. Not limited to dog fights, he was actually used to bait bears, bulls, and even lions! Though he has since developed a love and affection for his master, the English Mastiff retains his ferocious nature when guarding against intruders.

The Brazilian Mastiff has many different ancestors, including Bloodhounds, Bulldogs, and Mastiffs from Europe . He was originally bred to protect plantations in Brazil . More than other Mastiffs, this breed has a very keen sense of smell which he surely inherited from his Bloodhound ancestors. These dogs can be used for hunting, as they possess all the skills necessary to track and catch prey.

The hybrid American Bandog Mastiff is a relative newcomer on the scene, having been bred from American Pit Bull Terriers and Neapolitan Mastiffs, only within the last 40 years or so. They were originally bred by a veterinarian with the intent of creating the "perfect guard dog." With its easy, docile temperament and powerful, athletic physique, the American Bandog Mastiff may be just that.

This is just an introduction to the wonderful world of mastiffs. You will want more information before choosing your new canine friend.
